In a tragic accident witnessed at the largest airshow: Indian Tejas Fighter Pilot Killed During Aerial Display in Dubai
Dubai – November 21, 2025 – In a tragic incident that shook the largest aviation gathering in the Middle East, an Indian Air Force pilot was killed on Friday after his Tejas multi-role fighter jet crashed during an aerial display at the Dubai Airshow.
The Anadolu Agency, citing the UAE’s official news agency WAM, reported that firefighting and ambulance teams immediately rushed to the crash site and managed to bring the fire under control. A thick column of black smoke quickly rose over Al Maktoum International Airport, while sirens wailed across the area.
🔍 Incident Details: A Deadly Aerial Roll and Spectators’ Horror
According to eyewitnesses, the military aircraft was performing an aerial maneuver described as a “low-altitude roll” before it crashed and burst into flames approximately 1.6 kilometers from the main display area. Widely circulated video clips on social media captured the horrifying moment the fighter plummeted rapidly, to the shock and horror of hundreds of spectators watching the demonstration.
One attendee, Jignesh Faria (46), clarified that the fighter jet had been airborne for no more than eight to nine minutes and had completed two or three loops in the air before it nosedived into the ground around 2:15 PM local time (10:15 GMT).
The Dubai Government Media Office was proactive in announcing the incident on the platform ‘X,’ confirming its immediate handling by the specialized teams. The Indian Air Force also issued an official statement through its media coordination center, expressing its “profound regret for the loss of life” and affirming its steadfast support for “the bereaved family in this time of grief.”
The Indian Air Force did not limit its response to condolences but promptly announced the formation of a special investigation committee to determine the underlying causes of this sudden and tragic accident. India’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, joined in the wave of mourning, emphasizing in a statement that all ranks of the Indian military “stand firmly with the grieving pilot’s family.”
🛩 Background on the Tejas Fighter: A Symbol of Indian Technological Ambition
Today’s incident is not merely the crash of a military aircraft; it is a blow to an ambitious program. The Tejas fighter (which means “Radiance” in Sanskrit) is India’s only indigenously developed multi-role fighter jet. It is a project initiated by Hindustan Aeronautics in the 1980s to replace the aging fleet of Soviet-origin MiG-21 fighters.
The development of the fighter has faced significant complexities and delays over the decades, only entering active service with the Indian Air Force in 2015. This accident casts a shadow over its record, particularly following a similar incident that occurred approximately a year ago in western India, where the pilot survived by using the ejection seat.
A Tragic End for the Largest Aviation Event
This fatal accident occurred on the final day of the 19th edition of the Dubai Airshow, which is considered the largest in its history, having attracted over 148,000 visitors and more than 1,500 exhibiting companies. Despite the shock that hung over the venue, reports indicated that aerial displays resumed later the same day, as aircraft returned to the skies above the airshow site—a scene combining the industry’s determination to move forward with the painful memory of the accident.
